Not all online courses are created equal. What I mean by this is that some courses will struggle to see a single sale, and some will sell out hotter than Taylor Swift concert tickets. All regardless of audience size. The difference between the two? Finding your most profitable online course topic and idea.

Since 2018, my online courses have generated over $4 million in revenue. They’re the perfect product to increase your impact and scale your business because they:

  • Are incredibly scalable
  • Get you as close to generating “passive” income as you can get
  • Make a positive impact on your client’s lives
  • Expand your reach by serving more people than you could ever imagine
  • And so much more!

And after years of my own experience, and helping countless women with the creation and launch of their money-making online courses…

I can confidently say that there’s a tried-and-true methodology to creating and launching a multiple 6-figure online course.

So if you’ve flirted with the idea of creating an online course, but you’re wondering “will anyone even care to buy this…” This post is for you! Here’s how to find your most profitable online course topic and idea.

How to Find Your Most Profitable Online Course Topic and Idea

“I’m not an expert in anything!”

“Who will pay me to teach them?”

“Do I even have a right to charge for this knowledge?”

Let’s get one thing out of the way before you continue reading this…

These are just excuses your mind cooks up to keep you where you are. Consider this your mind’s way of protecting you. While it doesn’t actually serve you, it keeps you stuck exactly where you are.

So to quickly address these questions posed by your imposter syndrome:

You don’t need to be an expert. All you need to be a few steps ahead of your target audience.

People will gladly pay you to teach them something that solves their problem.

And yes. You do have the right to charge for this knowledge.

Now let’s dive into my strategies for finding your most profitable online course topic.

Finding your most profitable online course topic and idea

Step 1: Brainstorm a List of Possible Online Course Topics

When it comes to finding your most profitable online course topic and idea, you should start big. In other words, brainstorm as many possible online course topics and ideas as possible.

Think about the topics within your niche that your audience asks you about most often. If you don’t have an audience online yet, think about the clients that you’ve worked with, popular questions you receive from your friends and family, or what it is that you do for a living.

For instance, if you’re a fitness instructor at a gym without a following on social media, you know that your clients come to you for help reaching their fitness goals. That could take the form of weight loss, muscle gain, or even increasing stamina and endurance.

No matter your audience size, there is an area where you have problem-solving knowledge. Look there, start brainstorming, and make a list of possible online course topics!

Step 2: Narrow Down Your List

Once you have a list of online course topic ideas, it’s time to narrow this down. This step can be broken down into several smaller steps. Since narrowing down your list requires digging deeper, here are a few considerations to help you find your most profitable online course topic.

What Are You Excited to Teach?

I can’t stress the importance of this step enough. Creating and launching an online course doesn’t happen overnight. Make sure that the course topic you’re planning to create your online course around is one that you are passionate about.

Which Topics Are You Most Confident with Getting Results In

Out of all your possible online course topic ideas, which ones are you most confident with getting results in? And before you let imposter syndrome creep back in right here, look at the evidence of what you’ve been able to accomplish for yourself or your clients.

I don’t want you to get stuck with the word “confident”. Instead, I want you to look at the concrete proof that you’ve accomplished for yourself and others.

For instance, if you’re a Virtual Assistant, you might have been able to give your client peace of mind by managing their calendar and inbox. This is something that people will greatly benefit from.

Or if you’re an interior decorator, you’re able to stage a home that impresses your clients and their friends. Teaching others how to work with the space they have to achieve that wow-worthy decor is something your target audience wants to create for themselves!

How to find and validate your online course topic

Step 3: Know Exactly What Your Audience Will Pay For (Validate Your Online Course Topic)

Validating your online course topic makes a world of difference when it comes to the ease of launching and selling your course.

When your online course topic isn’t validated, you’re leaving your sales up in the air. There might be a chance that your course will sell like hotcakes. But there’s also a chance that your course could be an absolute dud.

Without validating your online course topic, you could waste hours of work without the guarantee of generating profit.

Discovering Your Most Profitable Online Course Topic to Ensure It’s a Winner!

Having a tried-and-true methodology to find your most profitable online course topic is just the first step. Validating your course topic is where you ensure it’s a winner before signing it off with your seal of approval.

Because spending time creating an online course that has zero guarantees of demand isn’t a smart move.
